CAVU was born out of a perceived gap in the delivery of patient care-focused philanthropy. Nick Leschly, CAVU's Chairman, was seeking an outlet for his own philanthropy and wasn't satisfied with the traditional options.

Nick invited a trusted group of personal friends to explore the options to participate in healthcare philanthropy. This group determined that there was very little being done to apply the tenets of venture philanthropy specifically to improving patient care.

Further, our conversations with community healthcare centers and medical centers revealed an acute need for help not only in expanding programs for patients, but also in addressing systemic problems and inefficiencies within the institution. These players were enthusiastic about the prospect of working with an organization focused on the issues of sustainable and measurable results that also contribute to address larger, long term institutional goals.

Bringing this full circle, CAVU identified several investors that were excited about supporting an organization like CAVU. They liked our focus on healthcare, but also our determination that the only way to succeed was to build strong partnerships with the institutions and communities with whom we are involved.
